Create Your 'New Normal'
The other day I had 3.5 years of sobriety. Now, while that is cool, I’ll tell you I didn’t even realize the date. This was a moment for me. After looking back and reflecting, I realized WOW. I am not counting down the days anymore. After doing some digging, I realized it was because I have reached the point of a ‘NEW NORMAL.’
I want to share my insights and story about this because it can be great perspective for those who want to change their life and rewrite their story. It’s never too late. Ever.
A favorite quote, ‘Change your perspective, change your life.’
Well my perspective is definitely different now! It takes some hard work and dedication but man is it worth it. I wouldn’t be who I am today without going through the struggles. I am obsessed with growth and will always be the person that wants to learn something new, try something different and look at things from all angles.
Here is an example of my perspective evolution.
Sam’s Old Perspective (Old Normal)
· I must fit in
· I can’t have a life without alcohol
· I must please everyone
· I must succumb to the acceptable culture
· And 8-5 job enough to cover my lifestyle is A-OK with me
Sam’s New Perspective (New Normal)
· Fitting in is not for me
· I can’t have a life without sobriety
· I will not make everyone happy
· I can help create a new positive culture
· I want a career where I am directly rewarded for my efforts and create the life I can travel and do anything I put my mind too and dream up.
See how these different statements and outlooks can make all the difference?
Once I embraced my authentic self, my life changed. I thought about things differently, I reacted differently and I looked at situations differently (Ex. Old Thought: Why is this happening to me!!?? New Thought: What is this trying to team me?). Changing how you think, can change your life! Like, do I need to say it again?
Back to the 3.5 years of sobriety. The interesting part about not realizing it was a sober anniversary was pretty powerful to me because that means I reached my new normal in regards to my lifestyle. When I first started the sober journey and even a couple years in, I would think about drinking. I would have flashbacks to those days and now it’s very few and far between because I have a different perspective on that and life. It took a lot of reps, a lot of struggles and hard self-discovery work to get there but once I reached that level – BOOM! It was super rewarding.
